Cellar Raid Highlight: Summer Wines That Aren’t Rosé
Rosé might be the default summer sip, but Italy has plenty of wines that capture the spirit of the season without being pink. This week for Cellar Raid, we’re highlighting two bottles that deliver sunshine, refreshment, and a sense of place, with a little more edge and a lot more personality.
This Week’s Featured Selections:
Etna Rosso, Tenuta delle Terre Nere “San Lorenzo” 2022
Etna wines are summer reds done right. This high-altitude Nerello Mascalese from the San Lorenzo cru is all about energy – bright red cherry, wild herbs, and volcanic minerality wrapped in fine tannins and juicy acidity. It’s light, served with a chill, and complex enough to stand up to grilled meats, charred vegetables, or seared tuna. It is Italy’s answer to Beaujolais – with lava rock
Sauvignon Blanc, Cantina Terlano “Quarz” 2021
This is not your average Sauvignon Blanc. “Quarz” is one of Italy’s benchmark whites – grown in the cool, stony slopes of Alto Adige and aged on lees for texture and depth. It’s precise and mineral-driven, with notes of white peach, lime zest, sage, and flint. There’s a tension and elegance here that makes it both mouthwatering and age-worthy. Pair it with crudo, asparagus, or anything green and fresh from the menu.
Skip the rosé rut. These are wines with altitude, attitude, and a whole lot of flavor.
